General concept This 30-hour program is designed to meet the requirements for occupational therapists to use physical agent modalities in their clinical practice. This course will cover the use of both superficial physical agent modalities (SPAMs) and deep physical agent modalities (DPAMs). The course is held over two weekends, each weekend with a total of 15 contact hours of education.
Course Description Weekend A: SPAMs and Ultrasound During this weekend you will learn how to use ultrasound and superficial thermal agents safely and effectively in your clinical practice. The course uses lectures, case studies, participant problem solving and lots of hands-on practice to teach the physical and physiological principles underlying the application of SPAMs and ultrasound and to give you the knowledge and confidence to use them to help patients achieve their functional goals.
Ultrasound; superficial physical agent modalities (SPAMs); including hot packs, cold packs, paraffin, fluidotherapy, whirlpool, light and lasers.
Weekend A Objectives At the completion of this weekend course, participants will:
- Understand the physical properties of therapeutic heat, cold, ultrasound and light.
- Be familiar with the recent research concerning therapeutic uses of heat, cold, ultrasound and light.
- Be able to select appropriate treatment parameters for using thermal agents for a variety of clinical applications.
- Know the contraindications for thermal agents.

- Be able to select the appropriate electrical stimulation unit to achieve desired clinical outcomes.
- Know the contraindications for uses of electrical stimulation
- Know how and when to use high volt, medium frequency, interferential, direct current and iontophoresis.
