Problem Solving Shoulder Pain: Rotator Cuff & Instability
Day 1: Have you ever wondered why the same four exercises are supposed to be given to every patient with shoulder dysfunction? Why sometimes they work and sometimes they don’t? When and how do the physicians decide to do surgery for a partial or full thickness tear? This course will provide you with a problem-solving approach for evaluation and treatment of rotator cuff injuries. Anatomy and biomechanics will be reviewed as it relates to rotator cuff injuries and subsequent treatment decisions – surgical and non-surgical. Alternative treatment techniques will be demonstrated that have been proven effective as alternatives or adjuncts to those currently used in the clinic. Patient cases will be discussed both for conservative and post-operative management. Day2: Shoulder instability has been a difficult problem to treat in the past and often a career ending injury. Over the past 10 years, surgical techniques and options have changed. These advances have brought about changes to us as the rehabilitation specialist. Shoulder anatomy and biomechanics as it relates to instability will be reviewed. Surgical techniques such as capsular shrinkage will be discussed and a video presented. Rehabilitation guidelines will be presented as a treatment algorithm for determining exercise progression for instability versus rotator cuff tears. Guidelines for assessing whether or not the patient will succeed with conservative management versus appropriate surgical care will be discussed. Alternative treatment techniques that have been effective in treating the patient with shoulder instability will be demonstrated.
