Using Pilates Rehabilitative Methodology To Treat 2 Common Skeletal Conditions: Hypermobility and Scoliosis

December 5 - 6, 2010  (San Diego, CA)

JL Body Conditioning Pilates Inc

Early Registration Fee: $425.00

Course Description:

One to two percent of the population, mostly women, have significant scoliosis. Hypermobility has been a poorly understood condition, whose diagnosis is often missed by traditional imaging techniques. Presented by Suzanne Martin, MA, PT, DPT, this week-end course is designed to address the growing need for physical therapists to expand their practice potential into the care of those with scoliosis and the only-recently understood dysfunctions associated with hypermobility.

The Pilates Methodology, especially when combined with physical therapy, is well-suited to help with the dilemma of pain and dysfunction associated with populations who have scoliosis and/ or hypermobility. Learn how to identify the differences between and the management of functional versus structural scoliosis, their varying causes and what you can do to intervene utilizing the Pilates Method of rehabilitation and management. Learn quick assessment techniques differentiating the biomechanic and clinical implications of curvature at the separate spinal curves.

There exists a number of patients who have scoliosis co-existing with hypermobility. The hyper-mobile population is especially at risk for increased ligament laxity and tends to have low tone musculature. Evidence-based diagnostic criteria will be given to determine the level of laxity involvement, and an overview of the spectrum of hypermobility, from pathological to benign, will be presented. The pathophysiology will be explained, as well as a case presentation of Marfan's syndrome will be highlighted.

Contraindications and precautions for treatment will be addressed for both populations. Course content reviews structural assessment and targets the most effective sites of concentration for optimal stabilization in order to restore optimal function and greatest discomfort relief. Manual treatments will be suggested and demonstrated, as well as emphasis being given for the rationale for spring compression engagement in the development of neurogenic strength. Specific reformer, trapeze table choreography will be presented along with a home-exercise spring program.

This is a basic to intermediate course.

Objectives: Upon completion of this course participants will be able to:

  1. Define, compare and contrast the conditions of scoliosis and hypermobility.
  2. Screen and identify patients with significant and minor scoliosis.
  3. Identify patients with benign hypermobility.
  4. Describe the biomechanical and clinical implications of scoliosis and hypermobility.
  5. Describe the impact of hypermobility and scoliosis upon other physiological functions.
  6. Perform a functional evaluation to identify core/trunk strength as well as weight-bearing (pelvic and lower extremity) movement dysfunctions.
  7. Differentially diagnose common acquired and traumatic problems associated with scoliosis and hypermobility.
  8. Develop treatment plans for these common injuries.
  9. Plan treatments in the Pilates environment.
  10. Set up a home well-being program for managing the chronic conditions of scoliosis and hypermobility.
