Course Description
Breast cancer is now considered a chronic condition. Currently, the American Cancer Society estimates that approximately 3 million women in the U.S. presently live with breast cancer, about 2.3 million have been recently diagnosed with breast cancer and about 1 million do not yet know they have the disease. Reproductive cancers present a double-edge insult for 2 populations of women. Not only does cancer pose a potential loss of life, it also affects gender identity, whether it occurs in the post-menopause or pre-menopause time of life.
The Pilates Methodology, therapeutically applied, is an excellent medium to guide these growing populations undergoing a life-altering experience. Meet the pressing need of clients living with breast cancer. Learn the language of the Pilates Method as well as the language of cancer. Understand the physical and psychosocial effects of diagnosis and crucial medical treatment interventions such as surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. Discover how reconstruction procedures and lymphedema risks pose additional challenges for these clients.
Find how you can safely and confidently help your clients facing physical restoration during and after diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. Specific contraindications to Pilates and the benefits of Pilates will be explained. Course content also reviews structural assessment and current research on the positive rationale for exercise for cancer survivors. Guidelines on how to progress clients, avoid lymphedema, and prescribe a complete physical program will be explained. Manual treatments will be suggested and demonstrated. Specific guidance will be given for mat, reformer and trapeze table work.
This is a basic to intermediate course.
