August 28 - 29, 2010 • Burbank, CA COURSE CLOSED
(Early Registration Deadline: August 7, 2010)
Location: Core Conditioning

Early Registration Fee: $195.00

Course Description:

Known as the "silent disease", osteoporosis occurs in 50% of all post-menopausal women and even 25% of men. This two-day course offers insight into the causes of osteoporosis (and its precursor, osteopenia), an explanation of the measurements used to detect it, contraindicated exercises as well as recommended strengthening protocol.  The course is unique in that it approaches the subject from a holistic view of the body and taught by someone with personal experience with the condition.  Due to its prevalence in our society, osteoporosis should be taken into consideration in any exercise or movement program.

Learn protocols to SAFELY work out your clients, modifying Pilates without losing its well-known benefits like abdominal control, even without spinal flexion.  Learn new bone-strengthening techniques to maximize bone density and improve architecture.  Learn to challenge all levels of clients and patients from the beginner middle-aged mover to the elderly who cannot get onto the ground to the advanced Pilates practitioner who wants to continue her hard-core workout without dangerous spinal flexion exercises like Overhead.   Improve posture and balance and empower your clients and patients.

Objectives:

Upon completion of this course:
  • Workshop participants will have a working knowledge of osteoporosis and osteopenia along with the causes, standard diagnosis and treatment.
  • Participants will know the movement contraindications for this population along with safe, strengthening protocol.
  • They will learn a methodical approach to working with this population regarding:
    • Recommended organization and progression of a session or class
    • Classical and contemporary Pilates exercises useful for this population
    • Integration of alignment, balance and propioception
    • Optimal tools for strengthening bone tissue
  • Participants will understand how the condition affects the client psychologically and emotionally as well as physically and learn how to impact and empower the person as a whole.
