Course Description:
The older adult population is growing, living longer and are leading increasingly active lifestyles. Yet, due to intrinsic and extrinsic factors, they are at risk for falls. The physical, emotional and financial costs of an accidental fall in the elderly can be overwhelming. Studies have shown that effective fall prevention programs can decrease falls and injury by as much as 30-50%. This 1-day course is designed for all healthcare professionals that work with community dwelling as well as institutionalized elderly. Come and learn about how to implement a multi-factorials and integrated fall risk reduction program at various level of care. This is an intermediate course level.
Objectives:
- Recognize the prevalence of falls in United States and its implication
- Identify physiological and pathological changes as risks for falls
- Identify dementia and declined in cognition with increased fall risk. Discussion on the subjective and contextual dimensions of occupation between the elderly and the caregivers to prevent fall
- Identify psychological and behavioral issues of fear of fall, fall-avoidance activity and occupational adaptation among elderly persons
- Discussion on the evidence of the post-hospitalization fall
- Identify evidences in promoting safety and function through home assessment. Factors affecting adherence to home modification and fall prevention strategies will be discussed within the context of exerting control and self-efficacy
- Identify evidences of poly-pharmacy as an indicator of increased fall risk in the elderly
- Identify evidences and validity of commonly used psychometric test in assessing fall risk in the elderly
- Identify various tools to assess risk for falls in the elderly
- Identify evidences for specific balance and strengthening exercises in fall prevention
- Recognize the National and Local efforts in fall prevention for the community-dwelling elderly person
- Discussion on the application of multi-factorials fall risk reduction in various community and institutional settings.

A certificate of attendance will be presented to each participant
for 6.5 contact hours. The Physical Therapy Board of California recognizes California Education Connection as an Approval Agency to Approve Providers of Continuing Competency Courses in California. This course is eligible for 0.65 CEUs for PTs and PTAs in California. CEC is recognized by
the Board of Certification, Inc. to provide continuing education for
CERTIFIED ATHLETIC TRAINERS. This course also satisfies the
requirements to obtain PDUs in the State of California for Occupational
Therapists & Assistants. California Education Connection is an AOTA
Approved Provider of continuing education.This course is eligible for

Speaker:
Kitsum Li, OTD, OTR/L,
received her first degree in Occupational Therapy from Hong Kong in
1986, and her advanced OTD degree from Rocky Mountain University of
Health Professions in 2005. For the past 15 years, she has been working
in a variety of community and home-based programs. Being a strong
supporter of evidence-based practice, she firmly believes that this is
an exciting time for all practicing healthcare professionals to excel
their practices, through the best evidence available, for the benefit
of the care of their individual patients. Kitsum has been actively
involved in the implementation of the “ integrated fall prevention”
program in both homecare and hospital settings. In addition to being an
active Steering Committee member in the San Mateo County Fall
Prevention Task Force, she also frequently participates in a variety of
community-based fall risk screening programs as well as educational
seminars to older adults.
In April 2006, she presented “An evidence-based fall risks reduction
program” in the Occupational Therapy California Association (OTAC)-
Spring Fling program. She is also the co-author of the poster
presentation title “A Lifestyle Fall Prevention Program: Role of the
Occupational Therapist” in OTAC annual conference October 2006. In
addition, she is also one of the guest speakers in “Home Health Panel”
in CPTA annual conference in September 2007.
Early Registration Deadline
The Early Registration deadline is three weeks prior to the start of the course. If your registration is received after the deadline, a $25.00 Late Fee will be automatically applied to the registration fee.

How Do We Sign-Up and Qualify for the Free Spot?
In order to qualify for this discount, we must receive all six completed registration forms with the appropriate payment for the five spots. If you want to mail in the completed forms, you must mail all six forms in the same envelope. If you want to fax in the forms, you must fax all six forms at the same time.
Please note that there will be no exceptions granted. We must receive everything at once in order to process these registration forms under the group discount policy.
Refund and Cancellation Policies:
California Education Connection reserves the right to cancel this seminar due to an insufficient number of registrants. Under these circumstances, a full refund in the form of a check will be addressed and mailed to the registered participant. Please note that California Education Connection is not responsible for any hotel, airline or other expenses incurred.
All cancellations by registered participant must be dated and submitted in writing. For cancellations received 14 days or more before the seminar date, the registration fee will be returned less a $50.00 administrative fee. A refund in the form of a check will be mailed to the registered participant.
Within 14 days of the seminar, no refunds will be made. California Education Connection reserves the right to change a course date, location or instructor. If the seminar is either interrupted or canceled by an act of nature, war, or any issue beyond the control of California Education Connection, no refund will be issued. |
